Product Description

Also known as Japanese fiber banana or Hardy banana which is native to Japan's Ryukyu Archipelago that grows to 18' tall. Bananas equates to tropical landscapes , however, this plant can even grow in locations that get snow down to Zone 5. The large cream or yellow flowers are produced during the summer, but you should not expect to eat the fruit on this species. Each small green banana is filled with black seeds and a little white pulp that made this inedible. Musa Basjoo has been cultivated for its fibers and as an ornamental plant. The fibers are used to produce textiles known as banana cloth. The pseudo-stems of the plant are beaten, bleached and dried to produce the raw material, which can then be made into products like hand-knotted carpets, tablecloths, kimonos and paper.

NOTE: REMOVE THE ROOT MESH
Came pretty sad and sideways but has since straightened up. One problem, only about 2 weeks in, everytime I water it, about 20 ants come crawling out which is... not ideal for indoors but the last frost is coming so it should be okay outside hopefully. This may be a me problem as I do have many ant hills in my backyard, but they seem to be in the soil. I don't see them at all until I water it. I've sprayed it with soapy water and sprinkled cinnamon on the soil, neither seem to work. Next, I'll try coffee grounds, and if that doesn't work, Diatomaceous Earth will be my next attempt. They don't seem to care a bit about the ortho I've sprayed around the window sil it sits on. I don't have ants anywhere else, see no ant trail to follow, so I suspect these guys came with the plant but who knows. The plant smells like banana when it's broken, so I'm sure that's what makes it so attractive.Update! One month in, the growth was slow and I decided to repot it again and adjust the soil, only to realize the roots hadn't expanded a bit since I'd potted it two weeks ago. Closer inspection, I noticed the roots were wrapped in root mesh- a product often used by growers to keep the plant growing upwards before sale rather than staying small while it works on its root structure. REMOVE THE MESH! I removed mine last week, and my plant looks healthy as can be, with a new leaf spiking out only a day after, and the leaf color returning with structure rather than floppiness. Now it will have a chance to gain some strength from the expanding roots, allowing it to take in more nutrients and water from the soil

Took a month to arrive. Delivered in mid May. Planted it in a pot at first and put it in the ground mid June. The photo is six weeks in the ground. About 2 ft tall and super healthy. I can recommend these guys.

2.0 out of 5 stars Definitely Disappointed
Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2017
I received this plant on May 1st. It had two mostly brown leaves and looked near death. After nursing it for several days, I finally saw one new leaf climbing from the bottom of the stalk. The picture is at the ten day mark and offers some hope it could survive. The single leaf is coming out very slowly.

The plant was definitely too small to easily survive any amount of time in a dark box in the mail and was much smaller, younger and less healthy than the picture on the listing. While I have done it before with consistent success, I really didn't expect much in ordering a plant through the mail but never would have expected someone to send such a young plant and expect it to survive. It wouldn't have survived without significant attention.

I chose 9GreenBox because of the positive reviews and am definitely disappointed.
