Product Description
Dichondra repens is a perennial ground cover plant (in USDA zones 7-11) that has a somewhat upright, creeping habit with circular leaves. It is not usually over 2 inches in height and retains its bright green color in temperatures as low as 25 F. (-3 C.). When this ground cover becomes full, it appears as a dense carpet-like grass and is often planted in places where other turf-type grass does not grow well. Dichondra can be grown from seed very easily. The recommended seeding rate for coated Dichondra is 3 pounds of seed per 1,000 square feet. The best time to sow Dichondra is from March through May; midsummer planting will germinate faster but will need careful, frequent waterings. Planting early will produce sturdy root systems that can take mid-summer heat and some water stress.

My first batch of seeds I tossed on the ground, watered it a couple days, saw the seedlings emerge from the ground, and promptly forgot about them. Result = dead seedlings everywhere. One day of hot sun killed them. (Temps in my climate are in the 90's - 100's.)
The second batch I threw on the ground as before, covered them with a thin layer of soil/sand, and watered regularly until the seedlings looked healthy enough not to require daily care. I continued to monitor their looks (were they wilting) and watered only when needed until they were firmly established. (The ones that are a bit shaded for part of the day are doing the best. )
, even though all of our other perineals have up to this date (May 6, 2019).
stumbled upon this plant type. I’m located in san diego and was hoping to find something that would stay alive year round. I busted my butt prepping my side yard by weed killing for weeks, watering and softening the dirt everyday, hand tilling, and then adding soils. My parents have landscaping and plant backgrounds, so I made sure to plant correctly. I first used seeds from home depot which produced nothing aside from a few grass blades. I then tried this which had sprouts within a few days. But it’s patchy. Some areas have a small dense patch while a lot of other areas are completely bare.
After that, I ordered more seed to go over the bare areas again, so far nothing. But will update in a few weeks if that changes. I made sure to place the seeds so that they would not wash into other areas while being watered. These are definitely better than home depot but am still awaiting results for patchiness.
