Assembly went fast and easy. About 30 minutes. The top hopper was slightly oval unassembled, but once assembled into the main unit was round, rigid, and sturdy enough for the job. One of the screw holes for the legs was a bit small but the bolt could be screwed into it.
I like the light plastic construction as it makes the device easy to carry and making it sturdier would not add anything in normal use. I used it with a plastic bag underneath which reduced any dust to a surprisingly low amount given what it was doing. I live in the wet Pacific North West so had to shred moist leaves. Did one bag at a time on the coarse setting. Enough moist pulp built up around the exit holes that I would clean it off after each bag, as the reduced hole size would cause it to shred too fine near the end of the bag. Easy to clean off with a wooden stick, like a paint stirrer. I would put 2 generous handfuls of leaves in and listen to the reduction in motor speed, making sure it did not drop too low which would overheat the motor (you can tell the other reviewers that did this), and wait for the speed to pick back up again before adding new leaves. So, I could shred a bag of leaves in less time than it took me to collect them, to put this trouble into perspective. Any dust produced was way less than using a strimmer for grass edging would produce. At the end of 8 bags of leaves, the nylon cutters still looked like new, and the device came with 36 spare cutters, so buying extras does not seem necessary for my 1/3 acre lot, for several years use. The device did not seem particularly noisy, not loud enough to annoy neighbors, but I wore ear protection anyway.
Given the $136 price I'm very happy as I could have spent way more for something to make my leaves better for a compost ingredient, and not had something so functional.
I assembled it, collected 8 large bags of leaves, shredded them, put them into a pile for compost material, and cleaned the device in less than 3 hours, which I am very happy with.
(http://smile.amazon.com/Joe-Chipper-CJ601E-Electric-Shredder/dp/B007VX11O8/ref=cm_cr-mr-title) I had purchased last year that was inadequate for my needs (shredding leaves).
Assembly: One the plus side, the Flowtron LE-900 has few parts to assemble. On the negative side, the parts did not seem to fit easily together. The funnel consists of two plastic halves that screw together, with small plastic tab flanges that overlap; they don't snap together and looking at them, it's not immediately clear how they fit (how one side might overlap the other, etc. Might be better if the two halves snapped together and were held in place with screws.
The next step consisted of assembling the legs, which again, are two parts, with two half-couplers that are screwed into place and held in with wingnuts. In the unit that I received, the holes where the screws go in were not completely punched out -- I had to use a flat head screw driver to bend the pieces of sheet metal out of the way so that the screws could pass through. When I did get them through the screws or wingnuts seemed to be a little stripped, I had to work with them a little bit -- another problem is that the two screw holes are placed too close together, so the wings on the wingnuts kept on hitting each other -- you sort of have to do them both at the same time.
Finally, there are two sheet metal screws and spacers that attach to the handle assembly -- these did not fit well together, one went on well, the other I had to work a bit. Took some work, but I got this thing together in reasonable time (less than half an hour) but like I said, these pieces could have been machined a little better.
Assembled, it's comparable to the size of a standard 30 gallon garbage can.
Operation is very simple, turn it on, throw the crap in, it shreds it using a mechanism similar to an upside down string trimmer. There are a couple of bungie straps on the underside to keep a plastic bag in place.
I shredded a 9' x 9' x 2.5' pile of pine needles in about an hour -- the most time consuming part was separating out the pine cones and small branches. It shredded them down to mostly <1" pieces, about the length of a thumbnail. On occasion, the hopper would get a little overloaded with shredded debris that didn't go into the bag... I used a wooden dowel to push it in. The string lasted through this pile -- I wasn't too careful given the volume of stuff I put in there, so a few pine cones and branches got down. I suspect with more careful separation, they'd last longer....but there was plenty left over after this work they didn't need to be immediately replaced.
Finally, this thing is messy and relatively loud. Though most of the material goes into the bag, there is enough that gets shredded and flung out that you will need to sweep afterwards. You WILL need eye protection and gloves would be preferable -- I got shot in the face and arms with a few stray pine needles and pine cone bits...didn't hurt, but they did sting a little bit. The material is shredded pretty finely, you might want to consider a mask as well. It's as loud as an electric string trimmer, you might need hearing protection.
Summary: This unit is good, it's probably not good for anything more than leaves and pine needles, but man, it shreds them down... about 7 cubic yards of material in one paper lawn waste bag. Assembly could be improved and it's messy, it's pretty big for doing only one job, but it was exactly what I needed and it did it very well. If you need to shred leaves and nothing but leaves, this is your machine. Solid 3.5/5... bumped up to a 4.
Pros:
Good shredding capability
Easy to use
Fast
Cons:
Assembly could have been easier
Messy
Loud
Probably only good for shredding leaves and needles
Kind of large for a one-trick pony
Top reviews from other countries
I was wrong: it's much more capable than a vacuum/shredder, and has made our leaf-shredding procedure a lot more efficient: instead of hoovering up one leaf at a time, we can rake them into a pile, and throw them in a handful at a time—allowing to process a lot more leaves in short order.
Assembly of the plastic funnel is a bit fiddly, but the rest comes together easily.
The cutting mechanism is actually a double plastic cord setup (actually, quadruple, because each one is looped back to create a double cord) as in a weed-whacker. It has several settings (Fine, Coarse, etc.); ironically, although the instructions recommend that you start with Coarse, it arrived on Fine by default. Coarse produces sufficiently fine output, so that's good. Other points to remember:
- It works OK with damp leaves, too—provided you don't overload it (i.e., no more than a double-handful at a time).
- Eye protection is essential, because it can throw up quite a lot of dust and debris. It's also pretty noisy, so wear ear muffs, too.
- Stick to leaves and avoid trying to mulch twigs, branches, stones or other objects, and it should do well.
