Product Description
Delightful Ground Cover
Lobelia grows as a beautiful ground cover, and its thick spread of tiny blooms will prove a wonderful addition for many gardens.
Lobelia (Lobelia Erinus Blue Carpet)
Easy to grow from seeds, lobelia plants are compact and free-flowering and are very useful for edging. They are also valuable for use in window-boxes, hanging baskets, mass plantings, and as a flowering ground cover. This variety of lobelia is a showy and dependable edging plant that is generally categorized as an annual.
Lobelia has a compact growth habit with leafy, branching stems covered in brilliant blue flowers with white eyes. It loves to bloom and will produce blossoms all summer until the first frost. Lobelia plants will live through the winter in mild, frost free areas to grow as a perennial ground cover plant. Lobelia prefers moist, rich soil and will continue to self-sow once it is established. It is native to southern Africa, and as such thrives in the heat of the summer.
Beautiful Attraction
How to Grow
If starting seeds indoors, sow 10-12 weeks before last frost is expected. These seeds are very tiny, so sow them atop prepared fine soil and press into soil without covering: light is needed for germination.
Use a well-draining soil with pH of 5.5-6.5 for these seeds. Make sure to keep soil slightly moist until germination, but not wet.
After all danger of frost has passed, these seedlings can be transplanted outdoors. Space them 6 inches apart. Once in bloom, dead flower spikes can be removed to encourage further growth.

Lobelia NEED light to germinate, but you also have to keep them moist. I have mine covered with a plastic tray, and the seeds themselves I just lightly sowed on top of the soil. They came in a tiny wax paper envelop that made them very easy to "pepper" onto the soil. Will come back in a few weeks to let you know if they've germinated!
EDIT: Back about a month or so later, and these seeds have an insane germination rate, let me tell you. I'd say the germination is 100%, which is rare for such tiny seeds. If you plant these, do so sparingly- I had to thin out a LOT. The "pots" (they're jiffy pea pots) that are completely full are where I did no thinning at all. I'll take a picture of the flowers when they've bloomed!
Overall so far, completely recommend. Great germination, and enough seeds to last you several seasons depending on your needs.
EDIT: May 31, 2018: These have bloomed beautifully! They've just started to trail downwards and the variation of colors is very nice. My only complaint is that I got a lot of blue in this batch, when I really wanted more purple. Next time I'll definitely grow these individually and wait to see what color the flowers are before planting into baskets and containers. That said, you can easily grow hundreds of dollars worth of Lobelia with ease, and lobelia baskets themselves are very expensive. So if you don't mind a little work and patience, this is a great buy! I mean, c'mon! 50 dollars for a basket or a couple bucks and some time?
Tips for growing:
- Use either seed starter soil or pea pots. Seed sparingly, as the germination rate is quite good.
-After they start sprouting, remove/thin out the weakest looking ones. I should've thinned way more than I had! You'll get much better growth this way.
-Keep the seeds covered with either a plastic tray lid or clingwrap. This helps keep them hydrated. If they're too dry they won't spout or grow.
-Do not feed until they are at least five inches tall. I use compost tea on mine, and I'd recommend the same.
- Give them full sun. They need a lot of sun to bloom in bounds. They are somewhat drought tolerant but their flowers look much better if you never let them dry too much.
